Tropical Costal Puna (Healing Noni) Tour: 6 hours

We begin this Tour driving through the old paniolo (cowboy) Pahoa town and visiting where the lava stopped a quarter-of-a mile from the town in December 2014.

Then a rest at the beautiful Lava Tree Park awaits us with a canopy of lush trees, hanging vines and wild orchids. We then travel to the eastern-most part of the Big Island: where the rising sun first kisses the Hawaiian Islands. Incredibly pristine air makes for a peaceful pause near the Ahalanui ponds - a volcanically heated pool. Here we can take a few moments for a quick dip or a chance to picnic. Further down the road is the Isaac Hale Beach Park, a true local favorite surf spot.

As we continue along the scenic Red Dirt Road we go through tunnel-shaped trees - passing by many black harden lava stretches on one side and the ocean with it’s brilliant azure waves on the other side.

Our arrival to the old fishing village of Kalapana is humbling and inspirational… This land continues to be built and changed by the unpredictable flows of lava. We walk 1/2 mile to meet the newest Black Sand Beach in the world: the Kaimu Beach. This is your time to observe the hundreds of keiki (baby) coconut trees, being planted in the new crashed lava by the joined labor of many hands of this unique community.

Looking up towards the Pu'u 'O'o vent we can see where the burning fumes from Madame Pele's lava spills have created over 600 new acres of land. This is your chance to meet the creation of life itself on this island. In awe, we view the brave residents who have returned to their former habitat to build new off-the-grid homes on the baked lava landscape.

As we conclude our journey - we take the opportunity to visit a Noni Farm and the sacred historic Painted Church, called “the Star of the Sea.”

To complete your trip we take you back to Hilo, with a relaxed and rested return.
